How nice is it to see SA books being so popular at Kalahari!

The Broken Window

Lincoln Rhymes (of The Bone Collector fame) is back in action in this well paced and played out thriller.

Rhymes is an interesting character in that being crippled he is expected to perform forensic investigation from his bed depending on the feedback and evidence collected by officers in the field.

The Broken Window is a very enjoyable read that asks some interesting questions of society. Rhymes and his team are chasing a killer who seems to have access to volumes of information about his victims and the people he sets up to take the fall.

The question that readers and the characters are forced to ask themselves is how the hell you counter the man who knows everything?

What I found particularly interesting about this book was the questions asked by the author about privacy, access to information (from both governments and corporates) and how that information is actually used.

It definately left me asking lots of questions that went way beyond the book!

The book also kept you locked in and wondering who the bad guy is all the way up to the end and trust me it isn't the character you think it is. What a pleasant change!

Rated the book a 4 out of 5 and would strongly recommend it.

Mushy Peas On toast by Laurian Clemence

I love to hear about South African books making a success and here's one that I reckon could be a little gem...

Mushy Peas On toast by Laurian Clemence

Here is the write up from online retailer Loot (See banner on the side of this blog):

Peas is a typical Jo’burg girl – she works hard, plays hard, and leaves a trail of destruction in her wake.
She’s a drama queen, with high heels and a soft heart. Just as life is going along splendidly, Peas’ long-term boyfriend (and possible fatherly candidate to her two perfect children) dumps her.

And so begins a journey of self-discovery, aided by a flamboyant Italian flat mate, an eccentric father and copious amounts of alcohol

Book details:
Laurian Clemence
Paperback, 272 pages
197 x 132 x 21mm (L x W x H)
ISBN-13: 978-1-77010-067-1

Sells on Loot for R117.

This title has had an interesting history in the South African blogsphere and the fact that its been turned into a book could be intriguing.... Let me know if you've read it or not...
