The Broken Window

Lincoln Rhymes (of The Bone Collector fame) is back in action in this well paced and played out thriller.

Rhymes is an interesting character in that being crippled he is expected to perform forensic investigation from his bed depending on the feedback and evidence collected by officers in the field.

The Broken Window is a very enjoyable read that asks some interesting questions of society. Rhymes and his team are chasing a killer who seems to have access to volumes of information about his victims and the people he sets up to take the fall.

The question that readers and the characters are forced to ask themselves is how the hell you counter the man who knows everything?

What I found particularly interesting about this book was the questions asked by the author about privacy, access to information (from both governments and corporates) and how that information is actually used.

It definately left me asking lots of questions that went way beyond the book!

The book also kept you locked in and wondering who the bad guy is all the way up to the end and trust me it isn't the character you think it is. What a pleasant change!

Mushy Peas On toast by Laurian Clemence

I love to hear about South African books making a success and here's one that I reckon could be a little gem...

Mushy Peas On toast by Laurian Clemence

Here is the write up from online retailer Loot (See banner on the side of this blog):

Peas is a typical Jo’burg girl – she works hard, plays hard, and leaves a trail of destruction in her wake.
She’s a drama queen, with high heels and a soft heart. Just as life is going along splendidly, Peas’ long-term boyfriend (and possible fatherly candidate to her two perfect children) dumps her.

And so begins a journey of self-discovery, aided by a flamboyant Italian flat mate, an eccentric father and copious amounts of alcohol

Book details:
Laurian Clemence
Paperback, 272 pages
197 x 132 x 21mm (L x W x H)
ISBN-13: 978-1-77010-067-1

Sells on Loot for R117.

This title has had an interesting history in the South African blogsphere and the fact that its been turned into a book could be intriguing.... Let me know if you've read it or not...

I thought it was quite interesting to note that on the international site (Amazon) the Nintendo brand was particularly strong. In comparison the two South African sites (Take 2 and Kalahari) had quite a large emphasis on PC and Xbox brands... wonder what to make of that and the buying habits of SA consumers vs. foreign consumers...??

Scarpetta - Patricia Cornwall

I'll admit I've read more than my fair share of Patricia Cornwall books - I think I'm man enough to admit it - but I have

never been a huge fan of hers. In other words, I would never intentionally go out and spend money on her books, but luckily my wife likes her a bit more than I do, so I end up reading the books.

Scarpetta is the latest in the series featuring Kay Scarpetta, the celebrity medical examiner, her high-tech niece Lucy, Pete Marino and the usual suspects. If you haven't read a Scarpetta book much of the storyline will be well lost on you as a number of references are made to incidents in previous books.

I personally hate it when I have no idea about the character dynamics going on in a book.

The book was very much a story of two halves with the beginning taking a long time to get going - it took till page 170 something before Scarpetta actually completed her first examination! A bit of a bore to be honest.

The second part of the story picks up the pace a bit but tended to get hung up on the character dynamics / interplay which some might enjoy but I kept skipping over to try and get back to the plot. I suppose it works for some people but not for me. The conclusion wasn't bad if not a little predictable.

Our end conclusion was that if you liked Cornwall you'll probably enjoy this book but if she isn't your kettle of tea don't waste your money.

Title: Scarpetta
Author: Patricia Cornwall
ISBN: 978-0-316-73314-4

We rated it a 3 out of 5.

Rigged - Ben Mezrich

I'll be honest - I'm an absolute sucker for 'money' stories. I'm not talking the latest Donald Trump biography or the "how I did it story" from Richard Branson - I'm talking something much classier...

One of my all-time favourite books is Ben Mezrich's - Bringing Down the House - the true story of a bunch of MIT students working in teams using card counting to hit casino's in Vegas.

I got a copy of his latest book - Rigged - and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The book is based loosely on the real life experiences of two young traders who work their way up the ranks in the oil trading game. As a day trader and investor, I absolutely love stories like this with big money, shady deals and dark forces trying to scupper trades.

If you're a trader and love fast, loose money then you'll know what I am talking about.

Title: Rigged
Author: Ben Mezrich
ISBN: 978-0-7475-9463-5

Rated the book 4 out of 5 and would definately recommend to any reader who loves trading and investment action stories!

Odd Hours

Odd Hours is the fourth book featuring the Dean Koontz character "Odd Thomas" and to be honest, I got the impression it was a book too far...

At least for the moment.

For those who haven't read the previous three books, Odd Thomas is a young man who has the ability to see the lingering spirits of the dead and is "telephathically" drawn to trouble or people in need.

Don't get me wrong - Odd Thomas is a great (colourful) character and Koontz has continued his ability to come up with witty one-liners and tongue in cheek dialogue, but I just got the feeling that something was missing in this book.

In a nutshell, Thomas is drawn to the town of Magic Beach off the California coast where he finds work as an assistant to a once-famous film star.

Odd has some unusual dreams that has left him trying to work out what he is seeing and how it ties into some rather shady characters he keeps running into.

Anyway the reader gets pulled along for an entertaining but not earth shattering story as Thomas slowly starts to unravel a very dodgy plot. If I had not known the Thomas character or that it was written by Koontz I suspect I would have been less disappointed.

Title: Odd Hours
Author: Dean Koontz
ISBN: 978-0-00-726754-5

We rated it a 3.5 out of 5 and while it was entertaining it wasn't necessarily the kick ass line we expected from Koontz.

Introduction

Welcome to the Rated Reviews blog - an online platform for gaming and book reviews.

As a bit of background info - I'm a South African blogger and a ferocious reader and I love visiting online sites to get a fair reflection from consumers to find quality books and games.

I currently manage the Gamers Hub and Reading Hub blogs on the iBlog platform but for various reasons I've decided to create a joint mirror site for these two sites to allow readers to share thoughts and comments.

Welcome to our readers - we look forward to exchanging ideas across the platform!
